By starting slow and low, and taking it one camera at a time. There is no rush to cover the entire continent in 2 years or to send out a thousand camera by the end of 2010. No nothing like that. By keeping it slow and low we let the journey unfold itself and take its course.
One-time use cameras have 27 exposures in them. The hope is that each person that gets a camera will only take ONE PHOTO, nothing more. That way, we could maximize one camera with an output of at least 24 different shots (less 3 for wastage) from 24 different people in 24 different locations and 24 different possibilities.
The creator is based in the United States. Foremost, the cameras are going to be distributed in the East and West Coast. Having relatives abroad the cameras are considered to be disseminated globally in the Philippines, Australia (Melbourne) and United Kingdom (Lanchester) initially. Ultimately, part of the One Photo project goal is to reach out to as many places and unique countries as it can.
The project officially begins in the first quarter of 2009! By then, we are hoping to publish the first sets of photos the camera(s) took!
Unofficially, this project is two years in the making- all in the head of the creator! Wanting to connect with people more than the internet has been the motivation for this project. To be able to interact with different people in different places utilizing something tangible, one that can be touched and leave a mark for the world to see is the inspiration.
Playing the concept and scenarios without a specific name, not knowing how and what to make of it, until everything just fell into place. On December 5th, 2008 – after trying in various play on words, a simple and easy to recall domain name won. Alas, onephotoproject.com is born.
First 5 cameras will be sent out in the US just before the year ends. 6 cameras to go international. A total of 11 disposable cameras will be on the loose by the new year!
This is a tandem of two sisters who live apart in the east and west coast part of the United States. Both born and raised in the Philippines, they are very proud of their heritage. Wouldn’t trade having the best of both worlds for anything! They are very close growing up with their two other sisters. And then there’s life. Life changed their circumstances and found themselves separated with one another.
Worlds apart literally- the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. They have not been together as sisters and family in 10 years!! One may see the other, or three will come together but never the four of them or the six of them (parents included!) in one place at one time! This project is going to hopefully be one of the many ways they could interact with one another.
This is going to be a long arduous project even for one camera…
Sending them out from home base and the other party receiving: domestic- 5 days; international- 10 days
Receiving party keeps the camera for no longer than 3 days before passing it on to the next person who holds on to the camera for 3 more days and so on, multiply to 24 (the number of persons) = 72 days!!
Returning to home base, processing the film, uploading the photos and description online, publishing to the website= 10 days
Whoa a total of 92 days and if we get really unlucky, perhaps 100 days before we could even see that one camera back! So you see, we are in no rush at all.
